Preservation Idaho is run by an all-volunteer board supported by support staff, education, advocacy, and membership committees, and our dedicated volunteers.

EXECUTIVE BOARD

Since 2014, Brittney has been actively involved in historic preservation through the East End Neighborhood Association, working closely with Preservation Idaho, the City of Boise, and the State Historic Preservation Office. As a longtime member of the Advocacy Committee and a leader in multiple nonprofit organizations, she has developed strong relationships, insights, and skills to collaborate effectively on preservation initiatives. Brittney’s experience in executive leadership and community engagement enables her to work with diverse groups toward the shared goal of protecting Boise’s historic character.

Doug Stan, Preservation Idaho’s Treasurer and Education Committee Head, has been a dedicated board member since 2009, focusing on expanding the Idaho Architecture Project (IAP). Originally launched as the Boise Architecture Project through his work as a history educator in the Boise School District, the IAP has grown into a community-powered catalog of over 600 historic properties across Idaho. It attracts thousands of visitors each month and features historic surveys, internship projects, the Building Boise video series, and an audio walking tour of Hyde Park. Passionate about history education, Doug continues to share Idaho’s architectural heritage through local stories while teaching history and economics at Boise High School.

Angie has been an Idaho resident for nearly 15 years, raising her family with a deep appreciation for historic preservation instilled by her historically minded family and grandmother. She has hands-on experience restoring an 1880s Victorian home and played a key role in saving a historic building for community use. Previously, she served on two boards for the City of Wichita’s Architectural and Historical Review and has been actively involved in grassroots preservation efforts across Idaho.

MEMBERS AT-LARGE

Paula, a retired Managed Care Director from Johnson & Johnson’s biotech division, brings expertise in strategic alliances and advocacy to Preservation Idaho. She has served on advocacy, membership, and events committees, worked on the Idaho Main Street Program launch, and contributed to the Threatened Sites initiative. Additionally, she has played a key role in preserving historic sites, organizing Heritage Home Tours, and coordinating public tours, demonstrating her dedication to Idaho’s architectural heritage.

Boise
Paula Benson

As an Architectural Historian at the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, Jason manages the National Register of Historic Places and Historic Tax Credit programs, allowing him to travel extensively and engage with Idaho’s historic places and passionate preservation advocates. A Comanche/Cherokee and enrolled citizen of the Comanche Nation of Oklahoma, he brings an unique perspective to preservation, emphasizing the deep connection between place and cultural identity. Holding a Ph.D. in Art and Architectural History from the University of Virginia, Jason’s research focuses on the built environment of the Western U.S., commercial building types, and Native American architecture. He has led architectural walking tours and actively contributed to scholarship on Idaho’s historic places. His work at SHPO provides valuable insight into statewide preservation efforts, major federal programs, and the challenges facing Idaho’s historic resources.

Jason Tippeconnic Fox, PhD.

Shannon has been passionate about historic preservation since 1989, starting with a Girl Scouts project at the Gaylord House in Corvallis, Oregon. Her career has spanned architecture and preservation, including work with the National Park Service, Oregon State Parks, teaching at the University of Oregon, and private practice. As a board member of Preservation Idaho, her goal is to contribute her professional background, collaborate with others, and help the organization evolve. Over the last three years, Shannon has provided technical assistance across Idaho, advising on over 100 structures, and gaining a deep respect for the diverse historic resources throughout the state. She’s eager to continue sharing the value of Idaho’s history and preserve its legacy for the future.

Coeur d’ Alene
Shannon Sardell

For the past four years, James has worked closely with the Pocatello Historic Preservation Commission, the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office, and the Idaho Heritage Trust, helping spark renewed interest in historic preservation in Pocatello. Notable projects include the restoration of the Brady Memorial Chapel and the development of effective preservation policies. His previous experience as an intern with Preservation Utah, where he assessed historic properties under the easement program, further honed his skills. James continues to expand his preservation knowledge through memberships with the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions, as well as serving on the Board for the Idaho Chapter of the American Planning Association. These roles align with his dedication to Preservation Idaho’s mission of collaboration, education, and advocacy.

Stephen Bond Garvan is deeply engaged in historic preservation and community building, serving as Chair of the Sandpoint Historic Preservation Commission and previously leading the Historic Panida Theater Board. With a strong background in arts and cultural stewardship, he has contributed to the evolution of institutions and organizations dedicated to preserving history and the arts. His leadership extends across various boards, including Pend Oreille Arts Council and Swallow Hill, reflecting his commitment to safeguarding cultural heritage while fostering vibrant artistic communities.

Sandpoint
Stephen Bond Garvan

Shauna has spent nearly her entire life in Idaho, where she has embraced its rich history and diverse landscapes. A Twin Falls native, she earned a degree in secondary education from Idaho State University, majoring in German with a minor in history. Over her 32-year teaching career, she primarily taught history in schools across Washington and Idaho. Now retired, she remains active in historic preservation, serving on the boards of Preservation Idaho, the Twin Falls County Historic Preservation Commission, and the Herrett Forum at the College of Southern Idaho. Her contributions also include work with the State Sites Review Board, archaeological surveys of 19th-century mining towns, and volunteering as a BLM Site Steward. In recognition of her dedication, she received the Esto Perpetua Award in 2020. When not engaged in preservation efforts, Shauna enjoys golfing, birding, camping, and exploring Idaho’s landscapes alongside her husband, Zeke, their daughter, Jenni, and a beloved crew of pets.

Kellie, Program Director at Preservation Idaho since 2021, brings 20+ years of nonprofit leadership and a passion for historic preservation. A former professional snowboarder, her global travels inspired a deep appreciation for cultural heritage and land conservation. She has led initiatives in community engagement, grant management, and youth outreach, strengthening communities through preservation. At Preservation Idaho, she fosters partnerships and innovative solutions to protect the state’s architectural legacy.

Nina is a recent Boise State graduate with a strong background in media arts, marketing management, and communications. She brings over 7 years of valuable expertise to our team. Nina was drawn to Preservation Idaho by the incredible history of the Treasure Valley and the chance to work with an impactful non-profit like Preservation Idaho. Passionate about historic preservation and non-profit community service, her skills in media and marketing are perfectly aligned with our mission.
