2025 ARCHWALKS walking tour series IS HERE!

We’re excited to bring back an incredible lineup for our 2025 ArchWalks series, featuring five incredible tours exploring Boise’s architectural treasures.

Tours will take place on the first Tuesday and last Thursday of each month, from May through September. Note: Sunday morning tour dates in June.

Season ticket packages are available, which include all five ArchWalks tours #1-5, May through September. Can’t make them all? No problem—individual tour tickets will also be available!

AVAILABLE TOURS:

Tuesday, May 6 & Thursday, May 29 | 10:00 AM & 6:30 PM

Presented by Dan Everhart, Outreach Historian at the State Historic Preservation Office (SHPO)

Note: This tour includes stairs and is not fully accessible.

  • Join Dan to tour one of the most historically important buildings in the state. Investigate that history while touring the exterior, interior, and landscaped grounds surrounding this newly renovated National Historic Landmark completed in 1871. NOTE: While much of the tour will take place outdoors, the building is not ADA accessible. Four (4) steps are required to access the 1st floor while much longer staircases reach the 2nd floor and basement.

    Dan Everhart is an architectural historian with a long history of working with Preservation Idaho and is currently the Outreach Historian at the Idaho State Historic Preservation Office. As a native Idahoan, Dan’s personal interests led him to research the unique architectural legacy of the state. He has invested countless hours as a volunteer for Preservation Idaho and understands the importance of educating people about the history of Idaho and the significance of preserving it.

Presented by Zoe Scuderi, Architectural Historian and Preservation Idaho Advocacy Committee Member

Note: 10 AM morning tours in June will take place on Sunday, June 1 and June 29.

  • Explore the many varieties of historic lettering and commercial signage on this walking tour though downtown Boise! From ghost signs to gold leafing, we will explore the history and practice of sign painting in Boise, and learn about the generation of local artists dedicated to keeping the craft of hand-painted lettering alive.

    Zoë Scuderi is an Architectural Historian, who recently moved to Boise, Idaho, from Washington state. Zoë is a member of Preservation Idaho’s Advocacy Committee and has previously led walking tours on homes in the Warm Springs Historic District designed by regional architect Kirtland Cutter.

JULY TOUR #3: GOOD OLE’ APARTMENT LIVING

Presented by Doug Stan, Preservation Idaho Board Member, Idaho Architecture Project Chair, and Teacher at Boise High School

  • Let’s take a historic walk in the near North End of Boise and see a growing city transitioning right before our eyes. Interesting and beautiful apartment buildings sprang up one hundred years ago and larger houses were transformed into multi-family living as the neighborhood changed rapidly. How did the construction of Boise High add to this? Join Doug as we rediscover an overlooked part of local history.  

    Doug Stan is a Social Studies teacher at Boise High School and a graduate from Occidental College, where he took Professor Robert Winter’s L.A. Architecture. This course is the inspiration for the Idaho Architecture Project, and sought to introduce students to neighborhood architecture and architectural history. Doug is a Board Member and the Education Committee Chair for Preservation Idaho.

 

AUGUST TOUR #4: The Story Behind the Blue: A Boise State Walking Tour

Presented by Emily Fritchman Mahaney, Local Historian & Boise State University History Department faculty member

  • Join Emily for a dynamic walking tour of the historic buildings and amazing stories that have shaped the Blue. From its beginnings as a municipal airport to its transformation into a humble Junior College, discover the evolution of the university’s collegiate architecture and explore the special history that make up Idaho’s largest college campus.

    Emily Fritchman Mahaney serves as a full-time faculty member of the Boise State University History Department. A fifth-generation Boisean, Fritchman Mahaney was raised in Southeast Boise’s Joseph Chitwood House - a vernacular Queen Anne - a few blocks from the Boise State campus. She is also a third-generation Boise State alumni. Her research interests focus on the legacy of the historic preservation movement and activism throughout Boise history. In addition to teaching and serving as the Department’s internship coordinator, her community involvement includes Preservation Idaho, the Old Idaho Penitentiary, Friends’ of the Bishops House, and the Egyptian Theatre.

 

September tour #5: Overland Road: An Architectural Smorgasbord

Presented by Barbara Perry Bauer, Historian and Founding Member of TAG Historical Research & Consulting

  • Overland Road is a bustling commercial street lined with a mix of commercial, residential, and office buildings. Join Barbara Perry Bauer for a stroll along Overland Road to learn about its transformation from a residential area to a commercial one, featuring a variety of styles from the 1930s to the 1970s.

    Barbara is a principal and founding member of TAG Historical Research & Consulting. As a consulting historian, she has worked throughout Idaho on projects ranging from museum exhibits to nominations for the National Register of Historic Places. She is the author of South Boise Scrapbook: A Neighborhood History, Treasure Valley’s Electric Railway, and Legendary Locals of Boise (with Elizabeth Jacox). Barbara is passionate about history and shares her interest through lectures, walking tours, and bike tours.
