Idaho Mining & Smelter Company Store
Orchid: Excellence in Historic Preservation
Awarded to the Clayton Area Historical Association
For the restoration of the Idaho Mining and Smelter Company Store in Clayton.

This landmark building of pioneer architecture was constructed in 1880. Not including a brief period during which the store was closed, it operated until the 1950s. With not much more than neglect to threaten its existence, the building lingered on the periphery of historic Clayton until it was acquired by the Clayton Area Historical Association and fully restored. This painstaking restoration and the efforts that this very small community has put into maintaining the building and keeping it open to the public are why Preservation Idaho is proud to honor the Clayton Area Historical Association for Excellence in Historic Preservation.
